Angkor Thom - The Royal Enclosure



Angkor Thom is the Royal City of Angkor and palace within an 8 meter tall fortress. 

The entrance of the gate is distinctively small by width of just 3.5m. Alongside of the entrance the stone valley of Devas and Asuras, the replication of 'The Churning of the Milky Ocean' in Hindu Mythology - Samudra Manthana.


In the centre of the walled enclosure are the city’s most important monuments, including Bayon, Baphuon, Phimeanakas,  The Terrace of Elephants and The Terrace of Leper King.


Within the enclosing of an area of 9 km², there are total of 5 main gates on 
  • North Gate
  • East Gate, Victory Gate next to the East Gate ( 500m north ) link Victory Square  
  • South Gate, the most visited gate
  • West Gate

Visitor will enter from the South Gate as it is the main tourist entrance to the site.
