Now back to Khmer Empire - Angkor with Apsara

Khmer Empire history can literally trace back as early as 802-1431 CE, when King Jayavarman II moves from Banteay Prey Nokor, Kampong Cham (known as Indrapura at that period,  during his reign in 781 CE) before his declaration as Chakravatin in Phnom Kulen.

The Mahendraparvata is the ancient name of 1st Khmer Empire city, located 45 km from modern city of Siem Reap, on the slopes of Kulen Mountain, in Siem Reap Province. This city predated as early as 350 years before Angkor Wat was built.

The empire rapidly emerged to a mega city in 11th -13th CE and historically proven it's existential with the ruins of Angkor City. It houses over 1,000 stones monuments in various sizes.

Angkor had been the largest pre-industrial city in the world, with an elaborate infrastructure system connecting an urban sprawl of at least 1,000 square kilometres (390 sq mi) to the well-known temples at its core. Angkor is considered to be a "hydraulic city" because it had a complicated water management network, which was used for systematically stabilizing, storing, and dispersing water throughout the area.

Angkor Wat, Preah Vihear and Sambor Prei Kuk - in a single trail

Cambodia will develop heritage tourism packages now that it has three World Heritage sites under its belt.

The three World Heritage Sites are Angkor Wat, listed in 1992, Preah Vihear (2008) and the Sambor Prei Kuk archaeological site in Kampong Thom province listed in July 2017.

The Sambor Prei Kuk archaeological site, a cluster of ancient brick temples scattered in the forest in Kampong Thom province.

“The word ‘Kampuchea’ started from the time when Sambor Prei Kuk emerged,” he added. “This historical site is very important for us to understand how Khmer collaborated with each other after a time of division.”

Built by Isanavarnam I, king of the Chenla Empire, the seventh-century ruins are an important piece of Cambodian history that predates the Angkorian period.

The temple – perhaps best known for its enigmatic carvings that appear to depict foreign visitors to the royal court – was inscribed on the World Heritage List during the 41st session of the World Heritage Committee held in Krakow, Poland, the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts announced in a statement yesterday.

Khmer Times quoted Tourism Minister Thong Khon saying the addition of Sambor Prei Kuk archaeological site as a UNESCO world heritage would prompt new tour programmes.

“About 50% of tourists to Cambodia visit cultural and historical tourism sites like Angkor Wat, so we believe there are opportunities to package the three sites.”

Cambodia National Tourism Alliance general secretary, Ho Vandy, noted that Cambodia’s travel agents association has 300 members and they will now be encouraged to promote the three sites.

Promoting a World Heritage trail for all three World Heritage sites remains a challenge. Angkor Wat attracts the most visitors, while just a few visit Preah Vihear, which is perched on top of a ridge adjacent to the border with Thailand and more difficult to reach.

To make a World Heritage trail work it would require considerable cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand to create a route with minimal back tracking. Ideally, visitors would start with a trip to Northeast Thailand known as Isan, starting from Buriram before travelling south to cross the border with Cambodia to visit Preah Vihear, continuing their tour to Angkor Wat, then to Kampong Thom.

Including Sambor Prei Kuk, latest World heritage site into a tour would require research by tour operators to work out suitable routes that could fit into a price bracket acceptable to travellers with minimum duplication of routes.

SRG Holidays Cambodia, is currently working closely with suppliers to create a suitable packages, time estimated for the whole journey and travel pattern which will includes agri-tour, cultural and archaeological aspects in a friendly manner. Currently SRG Holidays had been organising tour for selected market focus on introducing Cambodia as a destination, art and culture, food and drink, religion as well as the historical value in an exclusive way.

man mustache and long curly hair suggests that he is a foreigner.
"Our challenges is the provide an extensive coverage and as much details as possible, offering our products at a competitive price, things like Khmer Noodle (known as nom banh chok) is on our top list for food and drink, which is famous among local people but tourist unable to get a taste of it, therefore we take a step forward to open a small noodle house in 2015 just for this reason. We hope tourist that visit Cambodia will be able to remember not only Amok, there are much more we can offer as Khmer delicacy history is one of the oldest available in Asia for century that preserving its culinary art until present day."- Sam Chan, SR Group-Cambodia.

Rakhine and the Rohingya 2017

Most men would rather deny a hard truth than face it.
On August 25, 2017, the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army attacked some 30 police outposts and an army base in Rakhine State, causing the Myanmar Army to respond with security clearance operations.
The renewed violence has sent thousands of Rohingya Muslims and Arakanese Buddhists fleeing their homes to temporary camps in the region or across the border to Bangladesh.
Is the international media mistaken when they use phrases like “genocide of the Rohingya?”
Yes, a lot. Journalists have to focus more on diversifying their sources of documentation. I agree it may not be easy. I think there is enormous responsibility on media in Myanmar now that is opening up. Myanmar writers, Myanmar ethnicities take a responsible stand on this. It will not help if they take sides. But you need to be critical and self-critical. All we can say for now is Rakhine is in a critical state, no one is safe there.
International media should not  escalating the 'hate' to the world with unclear statements.
The Rohingyas maintain the view that they are long standing residents of western Myanmar, and they also maintain the view that their community includes a mixture of precolonial and colonial settlers. The official stance of the Myanmar government, however, has been regarded they are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
Myanmar's government does not recognize the term "Rohingya" and it prefers to refer to the community as Bengalis.
Prior to the 2015 Rohingya refugee crisis and the military crackdown in 2016 and 2017, the Rohingya population in Myanmar was around 1.1 to 1.3 million, 98% of the total population in Rakhine are Rohingya.
They reside mainly in the northern Rakhine townships.
As of today, Rohingyas have fled to southeastern Bangladesh as well as to India, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
More than 100,000 Rohingyas in Myanmar live in camps internally as displaced, and the authorities restricted their movement or allowed them to leave. Probes by the UN have found evidence of increasing incitement of hatred and religious intolerance by "ultra-nationalist Buddhists" against Rohingyas while the Burmese security forces have been conducting "summary executions, enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests and detentions, torture and ill-treatment and forced labour" against the violent group of Rohingyas community.
International media and human rights organizations have often described the Rohingyas as one of the most persecuted minorities in the world.
According to the United Nations, the human rights violations against the Rohingyas could be termed "crimes against humanity".

Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) set its Minister Meeting in Siem Reap, Cambodia

The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) is a natural economic area bound together by the Mekong River, covering 2.6 million square kilometers and a combined population of around 326 million.

In 1992, the six countries entered into a program of subregional economic cooperation, designed to enhance economic relations among the countries.By inviting tour operators and executives from hospitality and the MICE (events) markets, the meeting’s organisers hope to develop partnerships between the agriculture, tourism, environment sectors and develop specialty food products and services that can be offered at premium prices.

Interest in agro-tourism is reviving as tour operators recognise they must deliver a travel experience that is active rather than offering passive sightseeing.

Agro-tourism fits the bill and recent trending reports suggest that even the Chinese travel market is shifting from the standard shopping and sightseeing tours to itineraries that explore culture and offer rural activities linked to agriculture.

AMM-2 will showcase the wide array of safe and environment-friendly agro-food products and agro-tourism destinations from the six Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries.

The member nations are: Cambodia; China; Lao PDR; Myanmar; Thailand and Vietnam.

In its announcement to the travel trade the MTO said the event aims to identify agro-food products and services with high potential and to connect them with the tourism sector in the GMS.

Sessions will also focus on promoting food safety, improving agriculture value chain linkages, and expanding opportunities for small stakeholders to export.

For more than two decades, the six countries of the Greater Mekong Subregion have been working together under an economic cooperation program to realize their vision of a prosperous, integrated, and harmonious subregion.

The GMS Program has adopted a three-pronged strategy (the 3 Cs):
Strengthening connectivity through physical infrastructure and the development of economic corridors.
Improving competitiveness through market integration and the facilitation of cross-border trade and travel.
Building a sense of community by addressing shared social and environmental concerns.

The GMS Program, with the support of development partners, helps identify and implement high-priority subregional projects in a wide range of sectors: agriculture, energy, environment, human resource development, information and communication technology, tourism, transport, transport and trade facilitation, urban development, and other multi-sector and border economic zones.

Since 1998, the GMS Program has been using economic corridors to promote economic growth and development. Economic corridors are investment areas, usually running along major highways, which connect centers of economic activity.

A path in Cambodia Year Zero.

First They Killed My Father.

2017 biographical historical thriller film directed by Angelina Jolie and written by Jolie and Loung Ung, based on Ung's memoir of same name. Set in 1975, the film depicts 5-year-old Ung who is forced to be trained as a child soldier while her siblings are sent to labor camps during the Khmer Rouge regime.

The film screened at the Telluride Film Festival and 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, and was released on Netflix, 15 September 2017.
"It's the story of a war through the eyes of a child, but it is also the story of a nation to remembered."

In 1970s was a meaningless war for Cambodia, unconditioned bombing on Cambodian land caused half a million innocent life. Cambodian remembered. What is left until today is nearly 4 millions landmines, most of it still remain uncleared.

There is evidence that during 1969 Lon Nol approached the US military establishment to gauge military support for any action against Sihanouk.
Following the coup, North Vietnam forces invaded Cambodia in 1970 at the request of Khmer Rouge leader Nuon Chea.

These events marked the start of the Cambodian Civil War pitting Lon Nol's regime backed by US air power against the Khmer Rouge and North Vietnam. Lon Nol fled Cambodia in 1975 right before the Khmer Rouge's seizure of power, it was the 'Year Zero.'

Youtube New Logo 2017

YouTube has refreshed its iconic logo and introduced some major design changes to its desktop and mobile apps following its 12 solid years on a leading edge of videos streaming.

New YouTube Logo 2017

The logo ditches the red colour inside the "Tube" part of the name and places the now familiar play icon to the left side of the YouTube name, said a report in Android Authority on Wednesday.

Google says the change allows the YouTube logo to work better "across a variety of devices, even on the smallest of screens".

According to reports, the service is also getting a new typeface, colour scheme and several major changes to the look, feel and functionality of its desktop and mobile app.

Stay tune for the latest updates.

Living in Cambodia.

Modern Cambodia is the heir of once a Khmer Empire of South East Asia, one of the largest and strongest. It merely forgotten by other part of the world due to the civil war erupted in 70s' and the neighbouring war affair that eventually lead to a civil war and genocide under the Khmer Rouge Regime. It also bears the name of Killing Fields and 2 millions life lost.

The stability came after those dark period paying with an iron price.

Since then the Cambodian people have shown significant resolve in maintaining and upholding their ancient history and cultural practices. I arrived in Cambodia knowing very little about a country which has seen and come through it all until today.

I love food, be it just a street stall fried noodle or the most notably fine dining. Cambodian food had two other ingredients that give Khmer cuisines their fabulous typical flavour. One is a pungent fermented fish paste known as (pra-hok) and the other (kapi), a fermented prawn paste. These require an acquired taste for most but they are beloved by some who used them in many dishes or even taken as a dipping sauce. Collectively, these ingredients have become an important aromatic combination commonly used.

Not a single thing did I know about organizing or leading tours. However, back in 2015, I decided to offer a tour anyway, taking on the project with the exact same approach with which I’ve taken on just about in my life.

I started seeing thing that i endure most, the nature never failed to impress me,with so much details of history about civilization, I walked for hours just to look for a trace of the old ways and share it with those who visit here for a couple of days on holidays. Mostly people want to hear about Angkor temples or the Khmer Rouge, for me it is a study about people’s daily life, their social life and culture.

Sam, Co-Founder of SR Group Cambodia, is just an ordinary person love to travel and a dedicated destination tour planner under the flag SRG Holidays Cambodia offering excursions tour packages, hotel accommodation, tour guide services and transfer. "See Cambodia and fill-up the missing pieces with history, with your imagination, with facts, with fun that all these makes your visit memorable."
